When you pull a “Q” from the pile, you immediately start dreaming of triple letter spaces and high scores. But then, reality strikes and you realize that you have no “U” in your hand or that is playable on the board. A “Q” is worth ten points, so this can be the difference between winning and losing.
But don’t worry! For this #TileTipThursday, we are here to help. There are options even if you don’t have the seemly necessary “U.” We have put together a list of words to help you when you are a bind. Definitions are included so even if you are questioned by your opponent by the legitimacy of the word, you can still pretend that you actually knew the word.
Qi — n. the vital life force that flows through the body
Even if you aren’t familiar with acupuncture (which helps regulate qi), you should become familiar with “qi.” This handy two-letter word is perfect for adding a comfortable 11 points to your score.
Qis — n. The plural of Qi.
This three letter word will give you 12 points.
Qat — n. a flowering plant native to Africa
Qat (also spelled kwat) can save your Scrabble board. If you are stuck with a “Q” but no “U,” you can use this handy three-letter word can get you up to 12 points.
Qat — n. The plural of qat.
When in doubt, adding in “S” to words that are already on the board is a great way to add points to your score.
Qadi — n. A Muslim judge who interprets and administers the religious law of Islam.
Laying down the judge can get you 14 points.
Qadis — n. Plural of qadi
At this point, it should come as no surprise that simply adding an “S” to qadi will give you 15 points.
Qoph — n. The nineteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
Qoph may be only four letters long, but it gets you a breezy 18 points.
Qwerty — n. Of or relating to a keyboard having the keys in traditional typewriter arrangement, with the letters q, w, e, r, t, and y being the first six of the top row of alphabetic characters, starting from the left.
It seems like a made-up word, but Qwerty is real! You look at it every time you type, and it is worth 21 points!
Qwertys — n. Plural of qwerty.
If you are able to add an “S” to qwerty, then you will triple the number of points you can get. Because you are using seven tiles, you qualify for the bingo bonus, meaning you get a game-changing 72 points.
Mbawanga — n. A style of popular music of urban South Africa.
Mbaqanga is a great word to have in your pocket because it doesn’t use a ton of vowels but can clear out your Scrabble tile rack. Because you qualify for the 50 point bingo bonus, you get 72 points to help you dance your way to victory.
When in doubt, add an “S” to the end of the words for a bonus point. Just because you get a “Q” without a “U,” doesn’t mean that you automatically will lose the ten points if you are stuck with the tile by the end of the match.
